Low frequency at 125 kHz on older estates
Low frequency predates the current generation of credentials and is still in service on a large number of properties, usually on readers installed a decade or more ago. If your existing cards are LF, your bands must be LF — the two frequencies cannot read each other under any circumstances.

The frequencies are mutually invisible
This is the most common and most expensive misunderstanding in the category. An LF reader cannot see an HF band and an HF reader cannot see an LF band. There is no partial compatibility, no reduced range, no workaround — the antenna is physically tuned to one frequency and simply does not respond to the other. A property that orders the wrong one discovers it at delivery and has no remedy except reordering.
Where LF is still the right answer
If a property has a working LF reader estate — door controllers, time clocks, barriers — replacing all of it to modernise the credential is a capital project that a wristband programme cannot justify on its own. Supplying LF bands to match is entirely reasonable and we do it routinely. The judgement to make is whether the estate is near end of life anyway, in which case a phased migration is worth planning before another five-year run of credentials is bought.
Its physical tolerance is genuinely better
Longer wavelengths are less disturbed by water and less affected by nearby metal, so LF credentials tend to read more forgivingly in awkward physical situations — near a metal door frame, on a wet wrist, through a thicker enclosure. This is why LF persisted for industrial and access applications long after higher-capability alternatives existed, and it is a legitimate point in its favour on a difficult installation.
What you give up
Most LF credentials transmit a fixed identifier with no authentication, meaning anything that can read it can also reproduce it. There is no key exchange and generally no writable protected memory. For opening a staff gate that is often an acceptable risk, weighed honestly. For a credential that also authorises spending or opens guest rooms, it is worth understanding exactly what the identifier alone protects — and that is a conversation with whoever maintains the access system, not with a band supplier.
