What a recycled claim has to survive

Recycled yarn performs like virgin polyester. What differs is lot colour consistency and whether you can evidence the claim.

What a recycled claim has to survive

It is not a performance compromise

Post-consumer rPET is mechanically recycled into filament that weaves, dyes and wears like virgin polyester, because it is the same polymer. Tensile strength, UV fastness, chlorine tolerance and the way a weave carries small type are unchanged. Any supplier presenting recycled yarn as a trade-off between conscience and durability has bought the wrong yarn, and it is worth asking which.

The real difference is colour between lots

Recycled feedstock varies with what was in the collection stream, so the base tone of the filament shifts slightly between lots. Two dye runs to the same target can land marginally apart — invisible in isolation, obvious when a guest wearing week-one stock stands next to one wearing week-six. The mitigation is buying a season's yarn in one lot and taking phased delivery, which is a scheduling decision rather than a cost one.

When to say no to it

Where exact colour consistency across a season cannot be tolerated — a brand primary colour on a flagship property, for instance — recycled yarn is the wrong specification and we say so. Shipping two visibly different deliveries and explaining afterwards that this is the nature of the material is technically accurate and operationally indefensible. The guest does not know, and a general manager should not have to explain it.

The document is the point

What makes a recycled band worth specifying is the recycled-content declaration supplied with the delivery, because that is what a certification audit or a corporate client actually asks for. An adjective on a website is not evidence. If a property intends to make a public claim about the band, the claim has to be one that arrives in writing with the goods.
