Wristbands for all-inclusive resorts

An all-inclusive property issues a band once and then relies on it hundreds of times a day, at bars, restaurants, pool gates and the kids' club, worn by someone who never takes it off. Nothing else in hospitality asks a single object to do that much for that long.

All-inclusive resorts

The cost that matters is per wrist per week

Unit price is the number in the quotation and it is not the number that governs the budget. A band that fails on day nine of a fourteen-day stay costs its own price again plus a front-desk interaction, a walk to the room to fetch a guest who is now annoyed, and a re-encode. At scale the replacement rate matters more than the unit price, and it is invisible at the point of purchase because nobody quotes it. Ask any supplier what proportion of a season's bands come back for replacement. If they do not know, they have not measured it.

Tier design is the whole operational question

All-inclusive properties run package levels, and how those are expressed on the wrist decides how much friction staff live with. Four colours is the practical ceiling for reliable recognition at distance. Anything beyond that becomes a lookup, and a lookup at a beach bar in August means the bartender stops checking. Where a property has seven package names, the useful exercise is listing what a server actually adjudicates — usually two or three things — and letting the reservation system carry the rest.

Arrival day is the load case

Bands are issued at check-in, and check-in is concentrated around flight arrivals rather than spread across the day. A resort with three hundred rooms turning over on a Saturday issues most of its bands in two or three peaks. That governs how bands are packed and delivered — sorted into counted blocks by tier, so the desk takes a sleeve rather than counting from a carton — and it governs whether encoding happens at the desk or before dispatch. Bands encoded before dispatch remove the slowest step from the busiest hour.

What guests do with the band afterwards

At the end of a stay a band is cut off and binned, or it goes home in a suitcase. Which of the two happens is decided by the band, and it is worth deciding deliberately. A moulded plastic loop is waste. A wooden or beaded band frequently travels home and is worn afterwards, which is a marketing outcome a property is otherwise paying an agency for. Neither is wrong; specifying without noticing the choice is.

What to tell us before we quote

  • Average stay length, and the longest package you sell
  • Number of package tiers a server must distinguish visually
  • Rooms turning over on the peak arrival day
  • Whether the band carries spend, and to a folio or a balance
  • Whether children need a distinct band colour

500 bands per artwork, mixed colours counted as one run.

Compatibility is subject to confirmation of your lock system, credential technology and encoding requirements.

Usually specified

Bands that suit this sector.

The band is issued once and expected to work for a week or a fortnight without a second thought. Where it is specified to carry a tab, the charge goes to the folio and is settled on departure, which removes the till queue at the swim-up bar. Where it is specified for access only, it still saves the front desk the replacement conversation at 11pm. Silicone and woven substrates are the two that reliably survive that wear period.
