UHF long range, and why bands rarely use it

Ultra-high frequency reads at several metres and can read hundreds of tags at once. Both properties are genuinely useful and neither is what a resort wristband needs, for one blunt physical reason: UHF is absorbed by water, and a human wrist is mostly water.

The wearer is the obstacle

UHF wavelengths are strongly absorbed by water, and a person is an effective absorber at these frequencies. A UHF tag held in the air reads across a room; the same tag against a wrist, with a forearm behind it, may lose most of its range and may fail entirely when the arm is between the tag and the reader. Specialist body-worn UHF tags exist and mitigate this with spacers and tuned antennas, at a cost and thickness that make them a poor wristband.

Where it does fit at a resort

UHF earns its place on things rather than people. Laundry and linen tracking, towel issue, equipment and asset registers, back-of-house stock — anything where you want to read many items quickly without handling each one. A property may well run UHF for its linen and HF for its guests, and there is nothing contradictory about that; they are different problems.

Range is a privacy decision as well as a technical one

A credential readable at four metres can be read without the wearer knowing. On a guest-facing wristband that is a meaningful consideration and one that guests increasingly ask about. Short-range HF makes every read a deliberate presentation, which is easy to explain and easy to defend. Long-range body-worn credentials require a much more careful answer about who is reading what, where, and whether it is logged.

Allocation is not global

Unlike 13.56 MHz, the UHF band differs between regions, so a tag and reader pairing specified in one region may be operating on a different channel elsewhere. For a single-site property this is invisible. For a group standardising a specification across several countries it is a real constraint, and it is one more reason the guest credential tends to stay on HF even where UHF is used elsewhere on site.
