Lifecycle, reissue and retiring a band
A transponder has no battery, no moving parts and no meaningful wear mechanism, so it will outlast the wristband around it by a wide margin. That fact reframes the whole lifecycle question: the decisions worth making are about recovery, records and disposal, not about how long the electronics last.

What actually ends a band
Not the chip. A hairline break in the antenna at a flex point, a plug lifting out of a pocketed silicone band, a woven lock cut off, a laminate delaminating at an edge. All of these are construction failures, which is why the constructions that avoid seams — over-moulded silicone, sealed pockets behind a closure — outlast the rest by so much. If you want a longer-lived programme, buy a better band rather than a better chip.
Recovery is an operational question, not a technical one
Reissuing bands is straightforward technically: collect, clean, verify the read, re-encode, restock. It is the collection that defeats most properties, because it means asking departing guests for a wristband at a moment when they are leaving. Where a property has a natural collection point — a spa returning bands each visit, a staff programme, a club with members — recovery works well and pays for a better band. Where it relies on goodwill at checkout, recovery rates are low enough that the economics rarely hold.
Retiring a credential is a records job
A band that has physically failed is harmless. A band that has been lost while still valid is not, and the only thing that makes it harmless is the ability to identify its number and revoke it. That capability lives in the issue register the property maintains, not in the band. Any programme where credentials are issued without recording which number went to whom has no retirement mechanism at all, whatever the chip is capable of.
Disposal has rules
A wristband containing a transponder is an electronic item, and in a number of jurisdictions it cannot simply go into general waste at volume. Properties disposing of thousands at the end of a season should establish the local requirement before the season rather than after it. It is also the strongest practical argument for a plain printed band wherever a chip is not genuinely needed: no chip, no electronic waste stream, and a materially simpler end of life.
