The chip is not the fragile part

A transponder chip is a fleck of silicon a fraction of a millimetre across with no battery and no moving parts. In normal wear it is effectively indestructible. What surrounds it is a loop of very fine conductor, and that loop is the whole antenna — break it anywhere and the band is inert. Bands returned as chip failures are, in our experience of opening them, almost always a broken trace.

Where the break happens

At a discontinuity. Where a rigid inlay meets flexing material, where a glued plug closes a moulded cavity, where a laminate edge has begun to open. These are all bond lines, and a bond line in constant flexion at a wrist is being worked several thousand times a stay. That is why construction predicts durability far better than chip specification does, and why two bands with identical electronics can have very different service lives.

The pocketed silicone band

The cheapest way to put a transponder in silicone is to mould a cavity, drop the inlay in and close it with a glued plug. It works perfectly on the day it is delivered. The plug sits at the thickest, stiffest point of the band, it flexes constantly, and sun cream gets into the bond line. Once it lifts, the band snags on towels, a guest picks at it, and it returns to the desk in two pieces. Over-moulding removes the bond line entirely, costs more, and is the reason we quote a longer lead time for it.

What this means for buying

If you want a longer-lived programme, buy a better construction rather than a better chip. Ask a supplier how the transponder is housed — over-moulded, sealed pocket behind a closure, or laminated — and ask where the band flexes relative to that housing. It is a more informative question than anything about the chip, and far fewer suppliers have a ready answer to it.
