Bark composite

Cork

Cork is harvested bark, shaved to a thin sheet and bonded to a fabric backing so it can flex around a wrist without cracking. It is the lightest natural material we band, it sheds water rather than absorbing it, and it takes a laser mark cleanly — an unusual combination.

Why cork behaves so well on a wrist

Cork cell structure is a closed honeycomb, largely air by volume. That makes it very light, slightly compressible and warm rather than cool to the touch, so a band does not feel like a foreign object after an hour. The closed cells also mean water sits on the surface instead of soaking in, so a cork band leaving a pool is dry to the touch far sooner than any woven natural fibre.

The textile backing is doing real work

Cork sheet alone would crease and eventually split at a flex point. Bonded to a fabric carrier it flexes at the backing and the cork face follows, which is what allows a thin cork band to survive being pushed up and down a forearm repeatedly. It also gives the band two faces with different properties: cork outward for appearance and touch, textile inward against the skin.

Marking and colour

Laser marking removes a controlled depth of the cork face and darkens what remains, giving a permanent mark with no ink to abrade. That is the right method for logos and for QR panels, which scan reliably because the contrast is structural. Cork can be surface-pigmented for colour, but the natural mottle is uneven by nature, so solid corporate colour across a whole band is not what this material is for.

Limits worth stating

Cork is not abrasion-proof: dragged repeatedly across a rough surface it will scuff, and the scuff is pale against the surrounding face. It also cannot be made in bright saturated colours convincingly. Where a property needs an exact brand colour or a heavy-duty band, silicone or vinyl is the answer and cork is not.
